Fast Ten Miles

Garmin Link
10.25 miles
7:36 pace

Got out at 6:30 this morning from work - 38 degrees. Made good time - after the first two miles, averaged under 7:30 for the rest of the run. Legs are feeling fine, and the foot problem from three weeks ago is about gone. If I can keep from overdoing it in the next two weeks I should be in decent shape for the marathon. I haven't trained as consistently as last year - didn't do a formal training schedule, but think I'm in just about as good physical condition and about the same weight.

My advice is to do almost nothing the week before the race. It's tough to do but you will be surprised at the energy you will have on race day. I got my best "I Made the Grade" time following that strategy when I was 57 and my second best (only 16 seconds slower) when I was 62. The two days prior to the race are especially important. In your case you'll want to pre-hydrate good as well.

Is it the Boston marathon that you're about to run?

Thanks for the advice, Dad. I agree, and am planning not to run after this Sunday, a week before the race. I've noticed that after a week (or even two!) off, I have extra energy and endurance.

Hallie, this is the Philadelphia Marathon coming up on November 21. Boston isn't until April 18, so I'll have some time to get into better shape.

Ah ha--the Philadelphia Marathon. Best of luck, Murray--wish I could be there to cheer you on!
